Executive Decree No. 44780-S - Declaration of Obesity as a Chronic Disease of Public Health Importance

In January 2025, the decree signed by health authorities, including the Minister of Health, recognises that obesity is a complex, chronic disease and commits to a holistic and scientifically grounded approach to obesity, advocating for a redefinition of obesity classification, the adoption of comprehensive diagnostic tools, the combatting of stigma, and the implementation of supportive public health policies. The decree formalises the "National Standard for Comprehensive Care for Overweight and Obesity." which aims to ensure that all people who are living with overweight oe obesity receive comprehensive medical care, including everything from prevention to appropriate treatment.

Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) - Plan of Action for the Prevention of Obesity in Children and Adolescents

This 5-year action plan was signed by PAHO member countries, aiming to halt the rise in obesity among children and adolescents. It calls for a number of policies, including taxes on unhealthy food and drink, labelling and marketing regulation, health promotion, school nutrition improvement, and breastfeeding promotion.

Executive Decree No. 36910-MEP-S: Costa Rica’s School Child and Adolescent Food and Nutrition Programme

WCRF: The Ministries of Health and Education sets restrictions on products sold to students in elementary and high schools, including foods with high levels of fats sugars and salt such as chips, cookies, candy and carbonated sodas. Schools are only permitted to sell foods and drinks that meet specific nutritional criteria.

5 A Day Campaign Costa Rica

A campaign to promote the consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. On 23 March 2003, the 5-a-day campaign was launched by the government to encourage people to increase their consumption of fruit and vegetables to at least five portions. Health benefits such as reducing the risk of cardiac diseases, cancers and diabetes were clearly linked to the campaign.
